Meaningful Differences in the Everyday Experience of Young American Children
Published in Hardcover by Paul H Brookes Pub Co (July, 1995)
Average review score:

Of critical importance to parents, policy makerers, and eduHart and Risley have created an easy to read volume that speaks readily to parents, policy makers and educators. This book is a must for anyone who truly wants to understand the relationship between the way we interact with children and the evolution of their intellectual development. If you are interested in poverty prevention, early literacy intervention or the impact of family based literacy on childrens' academic success, you will be inspired by the work of Hart Risley.
Serious implications for early child intervention effortsThis book is one of the by-products of one of the most dedicated efforts to understand variances in the development of language. One of the reviewers of the book states that the work "...is a detective story of the most serious academic kind." Yet the book is written in a manner that would allow it to be required reading for "Parenting 102" if not "Parenting 101". The implications for parenting and public policy are profound

Mrs Todd's Shortcut/from Skeleton Crew
Published in Audio Cassette by Random House (Audio) (July, 1986)
Average review score:

A brilliant classicI received this cassette about ten years ago, when I was pretty much still a kid. I have grown up with this story; it has kept my family company on many a long car trip. Well, the older I get, the more I understand and appreciate the brilliance of this tale. The reading is excellent. I really feel as if I'm "cursin' and spittin' " up those "woods roads" along with Homer and Ophelia in her little Go-Devil. The narrator truly deserves an award for his reading. I don't know if it could ever be topped! He changes voices convincingly, and has the New England dialect down pat. Trust me, audio book fans, this cassette is magic! My biggest fear is that I will wear out my old copy before I can locate another. It's that good.
Entrancing story with very raw, true to life charactersI loved it. Wish I could find it again. Will pay double the cost for it.

The Musicians Guide to the Internet
Published in Paperback by Hal Leonard (January, 2000)
Average review score:

Works Even For "Older" MusiciansBeing an "older" musician--that is, I didn't grow up with a computer attached to my head--I've been rather biased in my attitude toward the Internet, thinking that the tools it had to offer were mostly hype. In truth, I was just intimated. However, having read "The Musician's Guide To The Internet"--and now being informed rather than ignorant--I'm neither dismissive or scared! And that's a nice change for a geezer like me!
Necessary for the Hip Hop Entrepreneur in the 21st Century! This book is one that we at nichemarket recommend highly in our Booklist for any Hip Hop Entrepreneur serious about a career in the music industry! --Walt Goodridge, President, Hip Hop Entrepreneur Association

Notre Dame Game Day: Getting There, Getting In, and Getting in the Spirit
Published in Paperback by Diamond Communications (30 November, 2000)
Average review score:

Game Day Scores Points With MeNotre Dame Game Day: Getting There, Getting In, and Getting in the Spirit is a must-read for even the most casual Notre Dame observer. Author Todd Tucker provides invaluable insight for making the most of your Notre Dame game day experience, including what to do before, during and after any Fighting Irish home contest. Even more intriguing are the anecdotes Tucker sprinkles throughout the book about Notre Dame, its history, its players and its facilities. That's where Tucker's depth of knowledge about his alma mater really shines through.
Even if you're no "Golden Domer," - and I'm not - you can appreciate the great traditions and spirit that Tucker ably details here. It's an easy read. I was left wanting more, including a couple of midfield seats.

Old-Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Kentucky (September, 2001)
Average review score:

Get it now, don't waitIt took me a while to cough up the do, re, mi for this one, but I'm glad I did now it's in my hands. I love this book because it's all about the music. It has enough ethnomusicoligy in it to assure you it's honest. It has a wealth of wonderful tunes both in print and on a CD. The CD gets the underlying rhythm across like notation just can't do. And the stories about the old boys and girls are a bonus. Too many old time fiddle books seem to be a catalogue of old boys. You sometimes wonder if the author ever heard them play. Not this book. This is a university press publication, so if it sells out it probably won't be available again for a long time, if ever. So get it now.
Tunes and HistoryTiton's book is an excellent compilation of fiddle tunes from Kentucky. After introductory material that places his scholarship within the history of research on old-time fiddling, Titon focuses on the transcriptions of 170 tunes that are either unique to Kentucky or else characteristic of Kentucky fiddling styles. The tunes are transcribed in clear, accessible, and accurate musical notation. He includes transcriptions of older recordings made decades ago as well as transcriptions of recent field recordings. The tunes are from the repertoires of numerous players, and the transcriptions should thus be very useful in comparing individual techniques. They also will add to the store of tunes that fiddlers can play. Titon includes discographic and historical information on each tune, thereby adding to the usefulness of his study of Kentucky fiddling. I also appreciated the biographical information and photographs of the various fiddlers, and listening to the accompanying CD warmed the written notes on the cold, printed page. The book has a terrific bibliography for those interested in additional research on fiddling, and I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in folk music, folklorists' scholarship, and Kentucky history. My only critique of the book is that Titon could have included more information about the style of fiddling used in each tune. Simply discussing bowing techniques, tempo, and ornamentation for various tunes within the pages where they were transcribed would have helped round out the excellent treatment of Kentucky fiddling.
